Due to their strategic situation in the Mediterranean,
over the years the Balearic Islands have become a nautical destination
par excellence. The islands are situated in a unique environment and
enjoy a mild climate ideal for sailing throughout the year. Above
all they have a first class infrastructure providing the yachtsman
with all the required services.
Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera combine
to form an important part of the yachting scene in the Mediterranean
with around 19,000 moorings distributed in 64 marinas. More htan 80%
of the moorings are located in Mallorca. The marinas are in greatest
demand in the summer months and most are completely full at this time.
During the rest of the year the occupancy varies between 60% and 90%..
Apart from unsurpassable facilities for yacthing,
the islands also offer excellent possibilites for other water sports
such as sailing, diving and fishing. Their ports play host annually
to top level events and competitions such as the King's
Cup, the princess Sofia trophy or the Salt Route, which attract
the best regatta teams from around the world.
The islands' coastline also offer ideal diving
oppotunities. The Federation of Subaquatic Activities can provide
information on the main centres as well as facilities for refilling
sub-aqua equipment. The Fishing Federation can in turn provide information
on the range of possibilities that exist to carry out this sport in
the Balearics. |
